Summary

Peat presents as a physical forward who compliments an offense as a rebounding, play finisher, and connective passer while providing defensive versatility and competitiveness. Peat is a limited offensive player at this time and serves as a complimentary piece rather than a feature item within a lineup. He has tremendous strength, effective footwork, and sees the floor well to support primary scorers as a screen setter, cutter, connective passer, and offensive rebounder. He has potential to expand his role but he requires significant improvement to increase his aggressiveness, ball handling, self-creation, and perimeter shooting efficiency and confidence. Defensively, Peat does have the greatest height as a forward but possesses impressive strength, athleticism, and wingspan to offer versatility as a defender. He plays defensive with sound technique and despite lateral foot speed, he demonstrates impressive anticipation and intensity to defend on the perimeter. In addition to defending in space, Peat has the ability to compete in the post. This versatility allows him to carry a high defensive burden but Peat needs to improve his discipline and generate more deflections rather than contesting shots.

Expectations

I expect Peat to earn a consistent reserve role playing between 12-22 minutes a game providing support on the offensive end and versatility on the defensive end while he develops and expands his overall game. Offensively, his role will be limited. He will serve as a functional piece who provides support as a screen setter, connective passer, cutter, and offensive rebounder. His offensive upside is much higher, but he needs to develop his ball handling, self-creation, and shooting efficiency and confidence from the perimeter. I believe in his ability to expand his game and within certain lineups, become a secondary or tertiary scorer. The primary bulk of Peat’s impact will come from his defensive contributions. He provides versatility to defend in space due to his defensive technique, length, competitiveness, and anticipation. He also has the strength to defend post players near the rim where he can match their physicality to hold his ground. He needs coaching to improve his discipline and elevate his disruption on the defensive end by generating deflections at a higher rate. Overall, he is a reliable defender who will position himself appropriately on or off the ball to contest shots rather than block them or generate steals. If Peat can tap into his potential, he has the potential to develop into a consistent starter on a competitive team.

Strengths

Offensive footwork mid/low-post/triple threat/ playing off of two feet, Composure, Powerful/physical, Midrange shoot, Court vision, Unselfish passer, Soft hands to catch passes, Competitive, Rebounding activity, Decisive/reaction time, Defensive footwork/technique, Lateral agility/defends with his feet, Rim protection/vertical contest, Low-post defense, Screen coverage versatility, Defensive hands, Defensive anticipation, Hustle/persistence, Transition defensive effort

Weaknesses

Shot selection, Shooting efficiency/flat shot trajectory, Hesitates to shoot from the perimeter, Ball handling/security, Inconsistent offensive footwork, Creation ability versus mismatch, Predictable passer, Defensive discipline/fouls, Late/slow while closing out

Offensive Footwork

Peat's offensive footwork is well developed. His triple threat is very composed but demonstrates greater effectiveness from the midrange than beyond the 3-point line due to his lack of perimeter shooting prowess. Within his range to threaten the defense, he executes off of either pivot foot and sequences ball and shot fakes to create an opening. He attacks well but relies on his strength and power to create an advantage while sequencing his footwork. He creates space well but relies heavily on midrange jumpers. He demonstrates greater potential to generate higher quality shot attempts. While attacking, he demonstrates the ability to play off of two to scan the floor, use his shot and ball fakes, or pivot to create an opening.

Offensive Reactions/IQ

He reacts quickly after receiving the ball. He understands where his teammates are and locates them quickly to serve as a functional glue piece within the offense. If a pass is not available, he uses his footwork to attack and consistently locates his teammates if he draws help defenders. His passes are predictable. He relies on easy reads and is manipulated into mistakes. I expect Peat to improve his ability to read and react while on the floor.

Ball Handling

His ball handling is limited. His most effective move is his spin dribble but he may attempt the move in traffic which exposes him to a turnover. Otherwise, he executes out of a power post dribble to sequence his footwork for creation. If tasked to create off the dribble, his effectiveness decreases and he is prone to turnovers. This is an area he needs to improve but it is functional at this point.

Shooting

Peat is very confident from the midrange. He relies on this shot too often. His shooting stroke looks consistent and he has a high release but a low trajectory. This lowers his overall effectiveness and leads to inefficiencies from beyond the 3-point line. He does not threaten the defense from beyond the arc and lacks confidence to attempt shots at a high volume. As mentioned in other sections, this lowers his self-creation ability because defenses will play off of him and he is unwilling to make them pay. I expect him to develop his 3-point ability, but his contributions as a shooter early on during his career will be sparse. Near the rim, Peat demonstrates good touch and an array of different finishes. He is willing to attempt shots using either hand. He also uses his physicality well to create space to finish near the rim.

Passing

He is an unselfish and willing passer who enjoys involving his teammates. He catches the ball looking to pass first rather than create his own opportunity. This is a great quality but he will benefit from working for his own shot and finding his teammates after drawing attention. As mentioned in other sections, he sees the floor well but his passes are often predictable. He anticipates help or rotations and looks to make the simple read but an additional defender can step in to intercept or deflect the pass. This is an area of development and I am confident that he will improve his ability to advance his reading and reacting ability. Another area that demonstrates promise, is Peat's big to big passing ability. He works well with other post players to create angles and deliver passes for easy conversions.

Creation Ability

Peat's creation ability is limited due to his lack of perimeter range. If he catches the ball in the mid-post or low-post, he is comfortable sequencing his footwork either by facing up or backing down his opponent. He executes an array of pivot moves and supports his moves with power and physicality to dislodge his opponent. As effective as his footwork projects, he defers to difficult post fadeaways too often. He demonstrates the ability to create more efficient shot attempts or draw fouls off of his fakes so I would like to see his execution improve as part of his development.

Spacing/Movement

He doesn't offer much in the way of floor spacing. His shooting efficiency and confidence from beyond the 3-point line is poor. His overall conversion rate is decent but his unwillingness to shoot open attempts and his flat trajectory require additional development to make this a positive attribute of his game. I expect him to develop into a respectable 3-point shooter and this will make the game much easier for him at the next level. As a cutter, screener, or mover without the ball, Peat demonstrates good awareness to position himself appropriately to create space for his teammates or make himself available for an easy shot attempt. He has great hands to catch passes from different angles and uses his physicality to finish through contact.

Offensive Hustle

Peat is very physical and competes well on the offensive glass. He is difficult to move so his presence on the glass is always evident. He creates second chance opportunities and also runs hard to convert transition attempts.

Defensive Footwork

Peat lacks high-end foot speed but he makes up for his deficit by executing sound footwork and technique. He consistently sits low in a stance. He maintains width while moving laterally and demonstrates quality anticipation and reactions to consistently cut off drives. He defends well with his feet. He cuts off drives or forces them wide. This leads to a high number of contested midrange jumpers or difficult rim attempts fading away from the basket. He also holds his ground very well on the block. He maintains a lower center of gravity which makes it hard for opposing players to dislodge him off of his spot. He moves his feet well to stay in position and maintains verticality while contesting.

Deflections/Activity

As effective as Peat's technique is, he does not generate a high number of deflections and is prone to fouling when he plays with aggressiveness. His length appears average and his closing speed is lacking which lowers his effectiveness to deny passes or jump passing lanes. He offers rim protection but more so as a help defender than the on-ball defender. I believe he has potential to expand his defensive activity due to his high motor and anticipation.

Intensity/Discipline

Peat is a quality competitor. He is willing to defend different opponents regardless of their size, speed, or length. He maintains his defensive technique to force his opponents into difficult shot attempts. His aggressiveness quickly becomes a detriment when it leads to poor fouls within a short amount of time. He will benefit from finding the right balance between intensity and discipline to maximize his defensive impact while maintaining his minutes on the floor.

Screen Negotiation

He is not a fleet foot athlete so his ability to get around screens is deficient. What he lacks in his ability to negotiate screens, he makes up for in his ability to cover screens in various ways as the screen defender. He offers versatile screen coverage option. He is effective as a hedger, trapper, switcher, or dropper. He is disruptive and times his retreats well to recover after his teammates regain their defensive positioning.

Off-ball Awareness

He is engaged off the ball. He is on time during rotations, denies post entry passes, and offers weakside rim protection ability. Due to his lack of quickness, he consistently struggles to close out on shooters. This will expose him on the defensive end and he needs to improve his footspeed to cover ground more effectively.

Defensive Hustle

He demonstrates great physicality and effort while competing on the glass. Once he has his hip on the opposition, their chances of obtaining a rebound are low. He also demonstrates great hustle and effort to recover in transition to challenge shots at the rim.
