Summary

Peterson presents as an All-Star caliber primary scoring guard with defensive potential and perennial All-NBA capability. Peterson is a dynamic athlete who has great size and skill. He compliments his skill and athleticism with a solid framework of fundamentals which allows him to execute his offense at a high degree on or off the ball. He is a 3-level scorer who can attack the defense explosively or methodically. His creation ability extends beyond ball handling as he moves well without the ball to consistently threaten the defense while he is on the floor. Although he has a scoring mentality, he is not adverse to distributing the ball to make the right play. This makes Peterson a versatile weapon on the offensive end. Defensively, Peterson is not as productive but demonstrates the instincts, anticipation, and reactions to defend on the perimeter and generate deflections off of the ball. He needs to improve his off-ball awareness and positioning in addition to his effort level as his effort fluctuates throughout a game. When the game is on the line, his defense is reliable.

Expectations

I expect Peterson to step right into a starting role from day one as the primary or secondary scorer. He is better in an off-ball role but has the capability to initiate the offense from a primary ball handling position. I expect him to threaten the defense from all 3-levels and manage an above average efficiency while commanding a high usage due to his elite skill level, size, and athleticism. I expect him to experience normal growing pains as he enters a more competitive atmosphere but he will transition nicely. He will benefit from additional coaching and development to enhance his passing potential. On the defensive end, Peterson may have a harder time transitioning to the NBA. He will need to improve his discipline, consistency, and off-ball awareness to provide a positive impact on the defensive end. His size, length, defensive technique, and athleticism will allow him to match up against varying guards and wings at the next level. If Peterson can tap into his offensive potential and minimize his defensive lapses, he has the potential to garner perennial All-NBA honors and be in consideration for an MVP.

Strengths

3-level scoring ability, Self-creation, Ball handling/creativity/shiftiness, Offensive footwork (triple threat, playing off of two feet, mid- to low-post), Balance and body control, Ball screen utilization, Unselfish, Basketball IQ, Confidence, Quick shooting release, Off-ball movement, Floor spacing, Disruptive defensive hands, Defensive footwork/anticipation

Weaknesses

Defensive discipline, Off-ball screen negotiation, Closeout technique, Absorbing contact while defending

Offensive Footwork

Peterson demonstrates advanced efficient footwork. He utilizes either pivot foot after receiving a pass or landing on two feet. He combines his jab steps with shot or ball fakes to keep defenders on edge. He elevates quickly from his balanced stance that a defender needs to close space on him, but closing the gap creates an assortment of angles that Peterson will exploit. He has a long and quick first step to get defenders on his hip. He has the agility to Euro-step through the lane, the power to elevate over a defender, and the poise to play off of two feet. His balance and overall feel provides Peterson with constant outlets to create space. And he demonstrates comfort executing his footwork at all areas on the floor.

Offensive Reactions/IQ

Peterson reads the defense well and reacts quickly. He has a grasp of the defensive positioning prior to receiving the ball. This allows him to attack, swing, or reverse the ball quickly. He understands the gravity he attracts and uses this to his advantage. He is an unselfish passer who draws two defenders and anticipates defensive rotations to exploit weaknesses. He doesn't hesitate and this will allow Peterson to play in an on-ball or off-ball role. Sometimes, he misreads the defense and traps himself or picks up his dribble too early. These are areas of further development, but his confidence on the floor is apparent and the more defenses he sees, the better grasp he will have to use his strengths to create an advantage.

Ball Handling

He handles the ball extremely well. Peterson is shifty and dynamic with the ball. He changes directions effortlessly and does so with balance and control to elevate for his shot, pass, or attack to draw additional defenders. He is an efficient dribbler. He handles the ball with purpose. He executes an escape dribble when he needs space, a crossover when his defenders over play his attack, or a protective dribble to keep defenders on his hip. He is comfortable and confident.

Shooting

Peterson has a beautiful shooting stroke. His shot starts from his base. He obtains his balance and elevates off of two feet while squaring up toward the rim. He elevates quickly to get his shot off with a high release point. His shooting form is repeatable and effortless. He shoots confidently from all ranges while maintaining consistent form whether he elevates off the dribble, off the move, or while spotting up. Impressively, he maintains his effectiveness even when elevating off of one foot versus two.

Passing

Peterson will not be mistaken as a facilitator as he is most effective as a primary scorer. Although his game is centered around scoring, he is unselfish and demonstrates a willingness to involve his teammates regularly. He swings the ball when the defense is shifted toward his side of the ball. He pulls two defenders away on the perimeter to create space for his teammates to

play in an advantage. He attacks the rim with a scoring mindset but maintains an awareness of his teammates' positioning. His ability to read and react to the defense along with his footwork to play off of two create plenty of opportunities for his teammates. Although the passing ability is evident, the low production is a product of his scoring mentality.

Creation Ability

Peterson's combination of ball handling, footwork, shooting, and awareness open up an array of creation opportunities. He is a threat to score from all areas of the court and he executes in a variety of ways. He can attack methodically or explosively. He can blow by defenders or sequence handles and footwork to create space. In addition to his overall skill set, he is an explosive athlete who doesn't rely on his athleticism to create advantages. I expect his ability and execution to only improve as he matures and develops further.

Spacing/Movement

Peterson creates just as well off the ball as he does with the ball. He moves regularly to maintain spacing within the offense. He reads and reacts to defenders well to adjust his off-ball actions to get open in an area to attack. He comes off screens tightly and sets his feet well to either attack or elevate for his jumper. He also relocates well to find a soft spot on the perimeter to knock down a 3-pointer.

Offensive Hustle

Throughout the season, Peterson has nursed lingering injuries. Despite the injury management, he maintained high effort on the offensive end of the floor. He consistently dove for loose balls and crashed the glass to tip in misses at the rim. He runs the floor well and demonstrates aggressiveness while attacking the rim. It will be scary to see how he looks when the injuries are behind him.

Defensive Footwork

Peterson sits down low in his defensive stance. He is light on his feet and moves well laterally. He demonstrates good anticipation and cuts off drives well. For a player who is seen as an offensive force, his defensive ability is present and shows a willingness to contribute positively on that side of the ball.

Deflections/Activity

He has good defensive hands and anticipation. He generates a high number of deflections on and off of the ball. He has long arms and quick reactions to disrupt ball handlers. He maintains engagement and looks for opportunities to jump passing lanes. If he is beaten off the ball, he demonstrates great length, agility, and explosiveness to contest shots from a trailing position.

Intensity/Discipline

Peterson expels a large amount of energy on the offensive end but he also works hard on the defense. His intensity level may vary from a possession to possession basis but when he is engaged, he is disruptive and difficult to attack. But with the increased aggressiveness comes a lack of discipline. He closes out recklessly and puts himself out of position to react to off-ball screens and actions.

Screen Negotiation

Negotiating on-ball screens is sufficient. He will execute the coverage called for but his ability to consistently blow up a screen or get over an action may vary from possession to possession. An area that Peterson greatly struggles revolves around off-ball screens. He struggles to react and finds himself lost behind screens. This challenge leads to open 3's and poor closeouts. He needs to improve this aspect of his game or he will present as a constant target on the defensive end.

Off-ball Awareness

Peterson's off-ball awareness is an adventure. He has a knack for deflecting passes and jumping passing lanes but this ability may affect his ability to react to his responsibility during off-ball actions. Other than off-ball actions, he reacts appropriately during defensive rotations and scrambles well to recover.

Defensive Hustle

As mentioned in the offensive hustle section, Peterson hustles to dive on the ground, crash the glass, and run back in transition despite his injury concerns. That is a positive attribute considering his offensive super stardom potential.
